I'm Xiao Jing. Our favorite place is the forest. Throughout the year, the mountains are filled with different treasures: mushrooms during the rainy season, pinecones, pine nuts, and ferns in autumn and winter. Each season has its own flowers and plants. The girls in our foraging group always go up the mountain, finding new things regardless of the season. Join our mountain adventure!

A hiking video:

Hiking distance: approximately 4 kilometers, with an elevation gain of about 300 meters.

Suitable age: 3-60 years old (in good health).

The entire trip is not very easy, but everyone’s physical condition varies, and the definition of 'easy' differs as well, so please judge for yourself. The youngest recorded participant was 3 years old, but she is quite fit and not delicate.

This is a light hiking route focused on collecting pinecones, pine needles, seasonal plants, leisurely walking, and crafting.
Autumn and winter: collecting cones and pine needles.
Spring: picking raspberries, wild blackberries, fiddlehead ferns, and tea leaves.
Summer: wild mushrooms.

Xiao Jing: Over the past few years, most of my time has been spent in Cangshan. The mountain is fragrant and visually appealing. Every so often, the plants along the same trail change, and when new wildflowers bloom, they often surprise me because just a few days earlier, their flowers and leaves might have been hidden and unnoticed. After experiencing these changes, I feel a closer connection to Cangshan. Sometimes I even feel like I’ve become part of the mountain, fulfilling my mission—while they grow, we collect.

Starting from the foot of the mountain, it takes about half an hour to walk along the stone staircase. In winter, the stream is smaller, but the ferns by the roadside are still lush. Recently, the winter cherry blossoms along this trail have finished blooming. Camellias in the pine forest are also starting to bloom, and from March to May, different colors of rhododendrons will bloom one after another.

The nearby pine forest is very soft underfoot, perfect for a leisurely walk. We will rest at a spot with a view of Erhai Lake, then continue into the forest, crossing a mini creek with large ferns, and then rest in the pine forest to enjoy tea. Along the way, we collect fallen pine needles and pinecones to make small ornaments. In Dali, 'pine leaves' symbolize good luck, and during festivals, people collect some to hang at their doorways. Pine needle ornaments can be used to dust off blankets or furniture, hang on doors or cars, or give as gifts to friends.

Depending on the season, the plants and fruits visible along the route will vary at different times.Camellia, pine nuts, pinecones, rhododendrons, fragrant white beads, Nepalese poplar, pods, hydrangeas, spring flowers, winter cherry blossoms, ferns, and more. It’s not recommended to ask specifically what you will see, because even in winter, Cangshan’s vegetation is rich. Walking in the forest is a general experience of the forest itself. Without a specific purpose, you’ll enjoy it more.

If you also enjoy nature and dislike commercial tourist spots, and don’t mind passing by cemeteries along the way, you are welcome to join the girls from our foraging group on a mountain treasure hunt.
