Before the Spring Festival, my plan to cross the Jinsha River with my family was full of setbacks. The Paris coach who accompanied me boating at Yeyuan twice early on had already returned to Wuhan, sharing photos with aunts and friends on social media. Xiao Li, who did diving, and his girlfriend went back to their hometown for a feast, and they had already reserved the platform for Tuesday in advance. After confirming by phone, I finally booked the paddleboard crossing activity on the platform.
Hanhan is our guide for crossing on the paddleboard. On the one-hour drive to Yongsheng County, what fascinated me was the clusters of agave plants, with their long flower stalks several meters tall, creating a striking contrast with the barren, cracked red soil. When the car crossed the Jinsha River Bridge in Yongsheng and I saw the shimmering green water, I knew this was the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. This bay of water determines the north-south and central alignment. As I bent down to get on the board, I kept silently reciting the line 'Spring waters are bluer than the sky.'
With the experience of paddleboarding at Er Yuan West Lake, crossing seemed merely a matter of direction and timing. On the paddleboard, whether sitting cross-legged or stretching out my legs, I couldn’t stand while paddling—lost in the mesmerizing blue water, I was afraid of falling in and waking up suddenly from a dream like the protagonist in 'Inception.'
After reaching the other side, the sweet, bursting oranges pulled me back to reality. Sitting in the orchard, overlooking the water, I could also see the shadows of submerged, withered trees during the water storage period. As I was lost in thought, my family was harvesting in the orchard. Such fresh, sweet fruit sparked their possessiveness.
On the return trip in the afternoon, after completing three-quarters of the journey, I gave up paddling hard and lay flat on the paddleboard, letting the river breeze carry me back toward the river center. The warm sunshine carried a hint of heat, and I closed my eyes. Hanhan took a few photos, while my wife and children sped up to reach the shore.
Only I was lagging behind the team. Until a song appeared in my mind—it's a duet by Bocelli and Sarah Brightman. The song is famous: 'Time to Say Goodbye.' At this moment, in this place, with this song, everything is perfectly arranged.
