Even an ordinary cup, in addition to its original beauty, contains traces of love and care in its restoration.
Originating in China and perfected in Japan, Kintsugi is a traditional method of restoring objects based on the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, or the beauty of imperfection and transience.
Kintsugi refers to a general technique for repairing items such as ceramics with lacquer. In addition to gold powder, silver or tin powder is sometimes used. The repair marks are usually golden, hence the name Kintsugi. The gold powder is only the final decorative layer, while the real binder is the natural lacquer, which needs a long drying time before the next step can be carried out. This makes the process very time-consuming.
Using Kintsugi to repair broken ceramics is not just about reassembling them for use, but about creating a beautiful and unique piece in its own right from the broken pieces. The restored items often take on a completely different charm, sometimes even more so than the original, intact pieces.
In Kintsugi, the restorer’s care for the object, the ingenuity in transforming damage into beauty, the focus on living in the present moment, and the patience with meticulous craftsmanship all embody an aesthetic philosophy that reflects Zen wisdom and a certain work attitude.
The damage of objects is beyond human control. How can we do our best to restore them to their original appearance, restore their beauty and vitality, and even create a natural beauty that blends seamlessly into one? Every restoration is a test, a creation, and even a practice.
Kintsugi is a fascinating form of aesthetic creation with endless possibilities. Depending on the characteristics of the object and your understanding of it, the result of the Kintsugi process can produce a completely different look.
The gilding process begins after the lacquer work is completed. While the lacquer is still semi-dry, gold or silver powder is lightly applied with a soft cotton cloth or wool tool, spreading the powder evenly over the surface of the lacquer. After drying in the shade for two days, the object is ready. The final step of Kintsugi restoration, gilding, marks the transformation of the work, thanks to the adhesive properties of semi-dry lacquer.
