2026.03.11~12 Nu River Travel Record

Although Li Zhen has bought a new car for some time, the green mini van A Sai remains our top choice for travel during our holiday, because only in it can we truly feel like on vacation.

AhA Sai carried us out of Wafang expressway exit. Rolling down the windows, a gentle, humid breeze greeted us—a feeling rarely experienced in Dali throughout the year. According to the weather forecast, we expected heavy rain to hit the Nu River valley tonight. However, the sugarcane vendor by the roadside said: 'Looks like it won't rain tonight.' This is an instinct from the cane farmers, highly credible. We understood but chose to temporarily ignore it.

Crossing the Nu River, we entered Mangkuan Basin. Cotton flowers hung high on the branches, shining brightly despite being late in the blooming season, and the silhouette of Gaoligong Mountain was visible in the distance. There is a longstanding Sapei shop in town famous for delicious shredded dried beef and roasted beef liver. After the meal, I enjoyed mango ice and gazed at pedestrians, shaking off the fatigue from the holiday work. That’s when I truly felt I was in the Nu River—a dry, hot river valley with a climate different from Dali. Warm, moist air from the Indian Ocean crossed over Gaoligong Mountain, sinking here. It is a place without winter, with distinct dry and wet seasons. The many giant banyan trees along the riverbanks have air roots that extend like straws into the soil, growing new trunks—an adaptation to survive in this hot, dry river valley climate.YesDevote these majestic trees as deities for worship and protection.

Nujiang is the last large river in Yunnan that remains in its natural flow state without being interrupted by hydropower dams. In a sense, it is alive.EveningWecomes here for a walk, with the naturally flowing cyan-blue river water and the evening breeze brushing against the smooth rocks along the bank, as well as us, sitting on the rocks chatting, the thin fog rises on the river surface, and the light in the valley slowly dims.
