Lao Shuai | The flowers have bloomed, waiting for a breeze [About Shengkai Bicycle]

My name is Shi Jingyi, and my friends call me "Lao Shuai". I currently run a store called "Shengkai Bicycle" in Dali, Yunnan. My main business is bicycle rental and cycling services.

I fell in love with cycling during my college years. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, my friends and I rode all the way from Shanghai to Beijing. In the summer before I went to teach at Beautiful China (a volunteer teaching organization) in 2011, I met a friend online and rode from Chengdu to Lhasa.

After the teaching mission ended in 2013, I set out from Lincang, Yunnan, and took the Bingchacha Line into Tibet, then took the Xinjiang-Tibet Line into Xinjiang, then took the Hotan-Alaer Highway through the Taklimakan Desert, then took the Duku Highway over the Tianshan Mountains, and rode all the way back to my home in Shihezi, Xinjiang. That was the longest long-distance ride in my life so far. The total mileage recorded on the meter was 6,732 kilometers, and it took 90 days.

Snowstorm hits Dead Man's Valley

During that heavy-loaded cycling trip in 2013, on the way from Yanghu Lake in Tibet to Gyangze, I was easily overtaken by a dozen people riding road bikes. When I met the cycling team again in the evening, they were already enjoying the sunset in the campsite built by the lake. Wilderness, light loads, teamwork, enjoyment... I was curious and even envious of that group of cyclists at the time, and it also planted the seeds for me to establish "Shengkai Bicycle".

After riding that long line, I worked for a period of time at Beautiful China and Beautiful Primary School, including 5 years in Dali, and then I settled here. In 2020, an ecological corridor was built by the Erhai Lake, winding 46 kilometers along the west bank of Erhai Lake. The lake, green land, flowers and greenway form an excellent cycling environment. That summer, I just resigned from Beautiful Primary School and wanted to do something suitable for myself and for Dali. Between continuing to do education and opening a bicycle shop, I chose the latter, and it has been two and a half years now.

When we first opened, there were only 10 bikes in the store. Because of the epidemic, there were very few tourists on the street. I waited in the store for 10 days, and finally waited for the first customer of Shengkai Bicycle, and got my first income - 40 yuan. I shared it with my wife when I got home that day, and we were happy for a long time. Soon, a local innovative school in Dali wanted to take children to do outdoor activities and found me. At that time, there were not enough bikes in the store. My wife and I asked friends to borrow two bikes after ten o'clock in the evening. That was the first team that Shengkai Bicycle received. I lay in bed for a long time before falling asleep at night. I was a little nervous and excited, imagining a better future.

"A better future" is indeed happening, but it's so slow that people can't notice it. I put my heart into my work, carefully taking care of each bicycle and receiving each customer attentively. I built the bicycle maintenance and cleaning areas bit by bit, and carefully selected high-quality and good-looking cycling equipment. I put anti-scratch film on the bicycle frames and replaced the outer tires with better puncture resistance, hoping that customers would feel more at ease when using the bicycles. My wife and I also compiled a Dali food map and made a cycling certificate around Erhai Lake, hoping to give customers a small surprise.

Our efforts are reflected in the ratings of Dianping.com, from 4.2, 4.5, 4.7 to 4.9. In July last year, Shengkai Bike ranked first on the Dali Prefecture car rental review list, and it has remained so ever since. When I am not busy, I often look through the good reviews written by guests and relive the joy of the sincere exchange of sincerity.

As a former educator, "child-friendly" is an important business direction for me. During the Spring Festival this year, "Nian Gao Mama" (a well-known parent-child blogger) took the initiative to recommend Shengkai Bicycle, and specifically mentioned the child trailer. Many families followed the recommendation and came to experience the fun of parent-child cycling.

Recently, more and more travel agencies and research institutions have cooperated with us, including some well-known institutions, such as Guangzhou No. 32, Scarecrow Travel, Dapeng Tribe, Wecycle, etc. Do your best, and good things will come slowly.

I often think about the relationship between the store and the customers. Customers are not God, they are ordinary, living individuals. Some people don't know what delicious food is nearby, some people don't know which way to go to Erhai Lake conveniently, some people are worried that their trouser legs are too wide and easily rubbed dirty by the chain, and some people need a shelf with a pannier to solve the problem of riding weight... In these aspects, Shengkai Bicycle can easily provide help. We create value for customers and get corresponding reasonable rewards. If customers think it is good, they will come again or even recommend it to their friends. This is a healthy host-guest relationship.

This store is located in the Dali Ancient Town scenic area. Most of the customers are tourists. In fact, most of them will not come back. In such transactions, the accumulation of word of mouth and reputation may be much slower than that of community stores and shopping malls. Those small things that are done correctly may not have any effect after one, two, ten or a hundred times, but there is no rush. I believe in the power of accumulation and believe that time will give the answer. This is especially like long-distance cycling and especially like education.
